Getting samples back from Mars is harder than getting there
Landing is solved. Launching off the surface and rendezvousing in Mars orbit has never been done.

Rovers have been landing successfully on Mars for decades. Bringing material back is a different class of problem, and the difficulty is concentrated in one step nobody has ever performed.
The chain
A sample return needs: collect the material, land a vehicle capable of launching, transfer the samples into it, launch from the Martian surface, rendezvous in Mars orbit, transfer again, then fly home and re-enter Earth’s atmosphere.
Each step has been done somewhere except the surface launch and the Mars-orbit rendezvous.
Why surface launch is hard
A rocket that has to launch from Mars must first survive the trip there, the entry, and the landing — which means it must be light enough to land and capable enough to reach orbit afterwards.
It also has to sit on the surface, possibly for a long time, through dust and temperature cycling, and then work on the first attempt with no one to service it.
Why the rendezvous is hard
Orbital rendezvous is routine at Earth because there is continuous tracking, ground control with low latency, and abort options. At Mars the light delay is minutes, so the vehicles must do it autonomously, and there is no second attempt if they miss.
Planetary protection
Returned material must be contained to a standard that assumes it might carry something. That containment requirement shapes the re-entry design and the receiving facility, and it is a meaningful share of the cost.
Where it stands
Architectures keep being revised, and the revisions are mostly about cost rather than physics. Expect the schedule to move; the engineering problem is real.
